Here at UTA, we’ve got some fantastic bus operators who brave bad weather, traffic and construction to help you get where you need to go. One of our very best is Connie Mason, a Salt Lake County bus operator who also helps train new drivers. Connie is known for her positive attitude and dedication to providing riders with a great experience. She’s logged more than one million accident-free miles. We asked Connie what’s kept her smiling behind the wheel for more than 15 years.

Q: Why did you become a bus operator?

Connie: I was a stay-at-home mom, but when my daughter was four years old I decided it was time for me to get out and be with people. I’m a really social person, which is why I like my job. Plus, I just like to help people. This is a customer service job, not just a driving job. When I pull up, I want people to be happy to see me. My goal for them is to be happy on my route.

Q: What’s the best part of being a bus operator?

Connie: There are a lot of good people in this town, and that keeps my job fun and entertaining. It’s very seldom boring. My favorite was driving the ski bus, because people are always having fun and are so happy to be there.

Q: What’s the biggest challenge you face as a bus operator, and how do you stay safe behind the wheel?

Connie: It’s always a challenge to keep the route on schedule in traffic or bad weather. To stay safe, bus drivers need to be stay aware, check your mirrors and be cautious. I always make sure to look left, right and then left again before entering any intersection.

Q: What advice would you give passengers to help them have a positive experience when riding the bus?

Connie: When it’s dark outside, make sure that you’re visible at the bus stop. I recommend that people take out their cell phones and wiggle them a little so the bus driver can see the light. It’s an easy thing to do, and it helps make sure that the driver can see you. Also, if it’s bad weather, add some extra time into your commute. Buses can’t drive 50 mph down snowy roads.
